Further investment further strengthens Siemens' industrial automation business in China

Today Siemens announces the Phase III expansion of Siemens Numerical Control Ltd., Nanjing (SNC) to substantially increase manufacturing and research and development (R&D) facilities. With an investment of more than 328 million RMB, the expansion will enable SNC to triple its production capacity and double its existing R&D forces within three years. The expansion will help to secure Siemens leading position as automation solution provider in China's machine tool industry by constantly offering innovative products and systems tailored to local needs.

"Siemens Automation and Drives Group (A&D) in China is a market leader in automation systems, motion controls and large drives, and our operation is highly localized," said Mr. Peter Herweck, Executive Vice President of Siemens Ltd., China and General Manager of Siemens A&D. "About one-third of our sales in China are generated from products manufactured here, and we have a clear strategy to increase this proportion. This applies not only to manufacturing, but to R&D as well."

SNC is a joint venture set up in 1996 between Siemens A&D Group and China Oriental Numerical Control Co, a subsidiary of China North Industries Group Corp. Located in Jiangning Economic and Technological Development Zone in Nanjing, East China's Jiangsu Province, SNC develops and produces numerical control systems and products for factory automation serving both China and the world markets. Now SNC has become one of the top suppliers in the country's machine tool industry thanks to its offerings tailored to local requirements.

SNC is equipped with modern production facilities and an R&D. Phase III expansion involves training and technology transfer. "Rapid business growth during the past few years has prompted us to increase our investment and expand our operations. The Phase III extension will more than double our existing built-up area from 8,200 square meters to nearly 21,000 square meters, and the number of our R&D engineers is expected to exceed 120 within three years, doubling the current 65, to serve local customers better." said Mr. Marc Wucherer, SNC's General Manager.

SNC's extension Phase III is not only a major milestone in Siemens' industrial automation business in China, and also strengthens Siemens' business presence in Jiangsu province. Siemens in the East China province has a strong presence with all businesses remaining robust and sound. To date, Siemens has set up 7 regional offices and 19 operating companies in Jiangsu, with R&D forces.
