SIMATIC PCS 7 – Which licenses do you need for communication on the plant bus?

In the SIMATIC PCS 7 environment, you need special SIMATIC PCS 7 licenses and additional SIMATIC NET licenses for function extensions.

This FAQ response provides an overview of the licenses and license packages available for the various system configurations.  

If you receive the following error message on the OS server in SIMATIC PCS 7 systems, first use the examples and tables in this FAQ response to check whether

• You have used the wrong licenses
• You have licensed too few connections
• You have not activated existing licenses and license keys

Accordingly, you use the tables to determine whether and which licenses you need to install or order.

What licenses are available?

There are basically two types of license: 

• HARDNET licenses: They are required if a SIMATIC network adapter (for example, CP 1613 or CP1623) is used for communication on the system bus.
• SOFTNET licenses: They are required for all other network adapters (onboard, separate network cards).

Example: HARDNET licenses in the PCS 7 environment when using a CP 1623

You have the following project configuration:

• SIMATIC PCS 7 V10.0
• Use of a SIMATIC Process Control System (IPC)
• Use of a CP1623
• Connection of additional AS Redundancy Stations

Which licenses do you need?

• Hardnet-IE S7 V18 - to activate the communication software for the CP1623
  This license (more specifically, the “IE V10.0” license package) is supplied with the IPC and is therefore already available in this example.
• Hardnet-IE S7 V18.0 REDCONNECT - for redundancy mode
  This is included in both the “HARDNET IE S7 REDCONNECT V18” license package and the “Powerpack HARDNET-IE S7 REDCONNECT V18” license package. Since you already have the “Hardnet-IE S7 V18.0” license, you still need the “Powerpack HARDNET-IE S7 REDCONNECT V18” license package.
